An Advance Directive for Healthcare is a package of two documents that you can employ to chart the direction of your health care when, temporarily or permanently, you can’t do so yourself. The component parts are the Living Will and the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. These documents prevent the decision-making for your health care from passing into the hands of judges who know nothing at all about you or your values or even to inappropriate family members.

Part 2 – The Living Will states under what circumstances you would or would not want certain medical procedures. Because this document, of course, cannot cover every contingency, through the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare you appoint a Health Care Agent to make the actual day-to-day decisions.

Most Georgians choose their spouse, a close friend or relative to be their Health Care Agent. In an analogous manner to the Attorney-In-Fact, you should choose someone who shares your values in regard to health care. Besides for honesty and integrity, the chosen person should be able to attend to you at bedside if necessary. He or she can’t be your physician, or anyone directly involved in providing you healthcare.
