Loading...There may come a time in your life when, due to advanced age, illness or an accident, you become temporarily or even permanently unable to make health care decisions for yourself. Fortunately, in Delaware, it is possible to make your wishes in regard to your health care known in advance.
Through a Living Will, you can state, in writing, what health care procedures you consent to and of which you don’t, and to specify under what circumstances you would want still other procedures such as advanced life support. Furthermore, in this state, through a document called the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, you name an individual to make all the many, many health care decisions that can’t all be anticipated in the Living Will. The two documents can be simultaneously attended to through a legal device called the Advance Healthcare Directive.
In Delaware, the person you appoint to be your decision maker is referred to as your Agent. Generally, a blood relative, a spouse or a close friend is chosen. The Agent cannot be an employee of the long-term care facility entrusted to care for you, unless the perspective Agent is related to you by blood. It is important to choose someone who shares your values, who will be in attendance at your bedside when needed, and who can argue effectively for your health care choices if need be.
