Under the Health Care Power of Attorney portion of your Advance Directive, the person you appoint as your Surrogate cannot be anyone professionally involved in your health care, such as your physician. This provision doesn’t apply to close relatives, or to members of certain religious orders that you may belong to. The person you choose should share your basic views, follow your directions about health care, and should be able to forcefully advocate your points of view in the face of opposition from others who may have differing viewpoints. It is also very useful for the individual to be available to attend you at your bedside should the need arise.
