Under your Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, you can choose anyone to be your Agent except your doctor, or anyone else involved professionally in your healthcare, unless he or she is related to you. In Kansas, these exceptions do not apply to certain individuals who are member of the same religious community to which you belong. However, experience shows that most people choose a spouse, a close friend or a close relative as their Agent. In all cases you will want to choose someone who can calmly, persistently and effectively assert your views and wishes against others who may oppose them. If at all possible, it’s advisable to appoint someone who will be able to be at your bedside when and if the need arises.
